Public space festivals, events and social sustainability: Post-pandemic insights from five European cities

Date: Thursday 2nd December 2021
Time: 10.00 – 12.00 (CET)
Place: University of Gothenburg and online

During the COVID19 pandemic public space festivals and events have been cancelled, postponed, or managed differently. This unprecedented situation requires and opens up for new governance approaches able to address the post-COVID19 recovery, where health and safety as well as social engagement, cultural inclusion and digitalization are of pivotal importance. How do we ensure the social sustainability of public space festival and events in the post-pandemic city? The seminar addresses these issues, and involves both researchers and practitioners in the festivals and events sector offering European perspectives on the topic.

Welcome to a hybrid research – practitioner seminar focusing on what the relationship between festivals, public space and inclusion will look like post-COVID. The research project FESTSPACE (http://festspace.net), based in Barcelona, Dublin, Glasgow, Gothenburg and London has, since 2019 been studying festivals staged in European public spaces, exploring how festivals change space and querying the role they play in making public space more inclusive.
